If you judge a book by its title, you might expect fish-out-of-water humor. Some parts are hilariously funny, but that’s not the main thing I’ll remember from A Beginner’s Guide to America. If the title suggests sarcasm, if you expect to hear about how America mistreats immigrants, you'll be largely disappointed. Maybe you take it literally as a guidebook. It might work at that level, I don’t know. My grandparents, who immigrated from Eastern Europe, wouldn’t have bought it. They were less interested in reckoning with the culture of “the old country” as they called it and more concerned with making a living in the new one.But if you’re neither an immigrant nor particularly curious about them, this beautiful book still has a lot to offer you. It is subversively patriotic. Rather than tell what it's like to live in a free country, Roya Hakakian shows you. You can see the experience of freedom through the eyes of an immigrant and in the words of a poet.Beyond America’s commitment to liberty, Ms. Hokakian brings a fresh, often-affectionate perspective to many aspects of our culture. To take one example, I was touched by her description of the immigrant’s surprise when American volunteers line up to help. “You wonder why, because you might not be a Jew, a Christian or a Muslim, but those who furnished your home did not care about your religion, only that you were new in town …” As far as I know, they don’t do that in most countries. Left to ourselves, Americans are too steeped in our culture to notice.As an American and feeling perhaps a bit dejected by the political divide, this book cheered me up. It did so without sentimentality or moralizing. It will remind you that America has been great all along.
